NavGurukul started in 2016 by Abhishek Gupta (IIT-D Alumnus) & Rishabh Verma (Self taught Programmer), runs a fully-funded residential course for students from underserved and diverse communities. NavGurukul’s vision is to create alternatives to colleges to challenge inequality in Higher education and create Coders, Critical thinkers, and Changemakers. The aim of the organization is to reach the most underserved girls, denied of opportunities and resources and expose them to an equitable and independent future. It is a non-profit organization helping students from underprivileged sections of society become financially independent. They teach students for free through their residential program and guarantee them a decent paying coding job. The students have been employed in companies like Mindtree, ThoughtWorks, and Unacademy. Their work has been featured in Forbes, TOI and they are supported by Microsoft, Accenture, KPMG, N/Core amongst others. NavGurukul has partnered with 9 Government bodies including Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU), Punjab, Tripura, and Odisha Governments and 100+ NGOs to identify underserved students who can benefit the most from the program. For more than five years, NavGurukul has been offering low-cost residential spaces for students from diverse backgrounds to come and learn Software Programming, using a vernacular curriculum in a financially sustainable setup. With the capacity of 660 students in their campuses in Dharamshala, Bangalore, Sarjapur and Pune, they run a one-year residential course free of cost for the Boys/girls/women/trans-women with guaranteed jobs that pay them 20,000 INR per month or more. These courses are a replacement for traditional software courses which costs 10x and consumes 4x time, with 700% better results. More than 155 students have been placed in 60+ Startups & SMEs with an average salary of INR 3.1 Lacs per annum. The course covers three different boot camps across 18 different milestones. Students progress on each milestone with the help of a mentor who also evaluates the depth of understanding for a particular milestone. The last four milestones focus on building projects that are production-ready so that students are suited to contribute to their workplaces from day one. NavGurukul works with 60+ placement partners across 10 different cities across India who hire student graduates. All the graduates get placed within two weeks of completion of the course. This is achieved by preparing them rigorously before interviews take place in the companies. Accenture, Microsoft, KPMG, Social Alpha, NCore, Wingify, Dunnhumby and DCX Technologies are a few of the major donors. Most of the donors are working in the IT sector and recognise the need for training women for IT jobs, given their gross underrepresentation in the sector. DSEU & NavGurukul Collaboration: In collaboration with Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU), NavGurukul has opened a center in the Dwarka campus for 100 girls/women/trans-women from February 22. It is a 20-month fully-funded residential training program on Software Programming which provides a guaranteed job of Rs. 20000/month as a starting salary after successful completion of the program. Student’s stay, food, laptop and internet facilities are provided and they would just need to take care of their personal and medical expenses. Students would also be receiving certification of “Advance Diploma on Software Programming” after successful placement. Alongwith training on Software Programming, students will also be trained in English communication, personality development, leadership skills, financial and digital literacy, socio emotional learning and so on.
